Kraft Foods’ Contribution to the Greater Chicago Food Depository

Working to improve lives
The food depository provides food for those in need and works to end hunger in Chicago.

How Kraft Foods helps makes a difference
Kraft Foods helped fund the Greater Chicago Food Depository’s first Producemobile, which delivers fresh fruits and vegetables to neighborhoods where produce is either not available or too expensive. Kraft Foods has supported the depository’s work to deliver fresh food for more than 20 years.

Real-life results
Bennie Branch, 51, knows what it’s like to be hungry. After a hospital visit in 2001, he couldn’t pay his bills and ended up in homeless shelters.  Eventually, Bennie found subsidized housing and was introduced to the Producemobile program, which delivers fresh food to low-income communities in Chicago.

Bennie started participating in the program in 2003 as a recipient and a volunteer. On a typical Wednesday, Bennie helps unload, organize and distribute crates of onions, lettuce, cheese, grapes, bread and frozen soup.  He also makes sure to bring some of this nutritious food home for his wife and two children.

“It helps a lot. It’s a very important program for the whole community. My kids love the fruit and potatoes. We try to feed them nutritious food but we couldn’t afford to without this program.”
