Biotechnology and the Use of Genetically Modified Ingredients

We know consumers worldwide have different points of view about ingredients developed through biotechnology – also known as genetically modified (GM) ingredients. That’s why we consider a number of factors when deciding which ingredients to use in our products. The most important, though, are safety and public acceptance.

Our decision whether or not to use GM ingredients is based on:
•     Fact-based scientific consensus about safety;
•     Local regulatory approval for use;
•     Our strict safety and quality criteria; and
•     Consumer acceptance.

The safety of our products, as well as the trust and confidence of our consumers, is critical.  We follow all local regulatory requirements regarding the use and labeling of GM ingredients.  We further support appropriate regulation of biotechnology and GM foods to assure the safety and integrity of the food supply, as well as to protect the environment.  Most regulatory organizations and scientists agree that the GM foods and ingredients on the market now are safe.  This includes the World Health Organization, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the U.S. National Academy of Science.

While the scientific consensus is clear, consumers don’t always agree. For example, in the U.S. most people are not concerned about GM foods or ingredients and so we use them in America.  On the other hand, in Europe, we know the general public doesn’t want GM ingredients and so we don’t use them there.
