Kraft Foods recognizes animal welfare is a growing societal concern, especially in the United States (U.S.) and European Union (EU). We require all our facilities and our direct suppliers’ facilities in the U.S. and EU that manage live animals to meet industry standards and government regulations on animal welfare. These standards cover the handling, housing, transportation and slaughter relevant to each operation.
In the U.S. and Canada, this includes species-appropriate standards developed by the following trade organizations:
- Beef and pork – American Meat Institute
- Egg laying hens – United Egg Producers
- Broiler chickens – National Chicken Council
- Turkey – National Turkey Federation
Suppliers in the U.S. and Canada must demonstrate compliance with the respective animal welfare standards by having audits conducted annually by a third party.
In the EU, not only do Kraft Foods’ direct suppliers have to comply with the established animal welfare regulations, but also those exporting to the EU are required to meet those standards as a legal condition of export to the EU.
