At Your Fingertips

Information Systems

Innovation can only happen if we’ve got the infrastructure to support it. And everything we do, every minute of the day, relies on having the right technology and information immediately available. Information Systems are the key. They keep thousands of people across a whole continent plugged in, switched on and linked up.

But they do much more than just answer helpdesk calls and fix our computers. Information Systems also invent neat solutions to our technological problems, and work out what systems and equipment we need to support our ideas. Before we’ve even had them, sometimes.

I deal with master data, which in our case means the single store of crucial information about our products and production materials. Anything from what raw materials we need to find, to how big our pallets are. When Cadbury joined Kraft Foods, we had a lot of master data to integrate. To find out how to do this effectively, we had to get the respective experts together.

So I decided to set up a blog after seeing how well similar projects had worked for our colleagues in America. It’s tough getting people started because they’re sometimes afraid of new technology or ways of working. But it’s great when, instead of emailing individuals for help, our colleagues think, ‘No, I’ll ask on the blog instead.’ And we’ve now got a healthy community of 200 registered users. Online spaces like this make sense, so we’re trusted to explore new ways of using them.
